Women will only be jailed for serious crimes, Justice Secretary reveals

Women should no longer be sent to prison unless they have committed a serious crime, the Justice Secretary says today, as he unveils a "step change" in the way the justice system deals with female offenders.

Ministers want to "break the cycle" of sending women to jail after it emerged less than 40 women behind bars in England and Wales have committed a violent offence and most others are serving just a few months for crimes like shoplifting.

Where were you when you realised "be yourself" is actually solid life advice?

That's 8 months old.

"What remains if you peel away all those things that help you think you know who you are? If one by one you strip away your cultural choices, the validation you get from the company of your peer group, the tools you use for communication? Then what is left behind? If you had asked me that three or four years earlier, when I was just arriving at Penlan, I imagine that I would have guessed: your true self. But I soon found that in fact I rapidly became less and less self-aware; my attention was elsewhere, on the outside. And now that circumstances had forced me to look inward once again, it was to discover that there was perhaps no fixed self to find."

I don't get how I liked music like this so much when I was 17. It's not like I was doing it for attention because I was too ashamed to tell anyone I liked it. It's really just shit.

To be honest I still kind of like it but I think it's only because I was so obsessed with grindcore shit back then that the love has just lasted.

I've been practicing singing while playing the guitar. It makes me feel a bit light-headed.

What's music lad up to lately? I always enjoy hearing from you.

I went to my grandad's birthday party the other day, other than that I've just been in my room on my computer as always. Got my hands on Roland's various VSTs a couple of weeks ago, been toying with them a lot ever since. I've always had an affinity for the D-50 and JV series sounds, but there was no software that could properly emulate them until recently, so I'm chuffed. They've also got a Sound Canvas plugin, emulating their classic line of General MIDI sound modules that a lot of game soundtracks from the early-mid 90s were designed with, and I've managed to set it up in such a way that all MIDI on my PC runs through it.

I had BIG poos and LITTLE wees and a big plate of whibblescromps for teas.

Times like this I can look back and think "Yes, it's been a good day today".

What are your chess.com live blitz rankings?

I'm feeling a bit low tonight. I've been getting really annoyed with myself lately for not pushing myself enough socially. Anyone want to chat on voice somewhere?

Are you close to your grandma? I really miss mine, I liked her more than my mum. Look after her lad. I don't know what any of that music stuff means but I'm glad you're still at it.

I get along with her, yeah. I used to stay at my paternal grandparents house every weekend from the age of 7 to my mid-teens, and then every other weekend into adulthood, as my dad lived with them for about 15 years after his divorce, so I was around them a lot. They've both moved to separate places since then (still within a couple of miles of each other), but I do still see them every couple of months. They're in good health right now, at least as much as you can be at their age, but I do dread the day when that inevitably changes. My grandma's younger brother and uncle both passed away a few months ago, so thoughts of that nature have been playing on my mind a lot lately.

Thoughts on Em7?

YouTube embed. Click thumbnail to play.

This is more like it.

>ywn be in a cool band

Individual chords mean very little until they're following or followed by other chords. Em7 followed by A7, or sandwiched between a Dm7 and EbM7 can sound great, whereas an Em7 into DbM7 usually sounds quite dissonant. But if you change the context and slap a CM7 after the DbM7, it makes for a nice jazzy cadence. So with every chord, it all depends on what's come before, and what's coming next. It's like individual colour values, on their own they don't mean anything, but when they're surrounded by other colours, they're given a context, and they can be deemed good or bad.

I hate to admit it, but it feels like the board is dying. I've been dreading this.

I've not posted since the 11th despite being at my computer and having the thread open every day. I've not done anything out of the ordinary or worth talking about, and I'm not really interested in entertaining the lad who uses this thread as his personal dumping ground.

I've felt this way for about a year at least

It might be more than that lads dumping ground if anons like you made an effort

It's been like this for three years, and it will for another three.

I am and always shall be a great alpha male. I am in search of other similar men who would like to chat with me in a platonic way.

I'm the same tbh.

It's not really a case of making an effort, it's literally a case of I do very little so I have very little to post.

>It might be more than that lads dumping ground if anons like you made an effort

I'm not the one complaining about the board being dead. We have pretty much the same number of regulars as we did a year or two ago, and we've had many quiet weeks/months like this in the past, yet here we are, so I'm not bothered. I've always held the opinion that I'd rather have no posts than shit posts, and I'll always choose to pass on replying to anyone deperately trying to force "board activity" using weak bait, non sequiturs, and bizarre roleplay, rather than give it any validation.

Not feeling to great lads, think I'm another bout of misery is kicking in. Hopefully I can push through this one.

Is there a greater hell?

There is not. I haven't had it for a while though, after a long stretch of getting it a lot. Not exactly sure why, but I did reduce my salt intake and made an effort to drink even more water than I already was.

What the fuck is acid dick? Some kind of normie STD?

It's when your dick burns and you have an overwhelming desire to piss (but very little piss comes out) after wanking. Its not a normie affliction, quite the opposite in fact.

No, it's when you piss and it hurts like fuck afterwards, particularly if you've had a fap not long before, but sometimes even without. I'm a virgin, been a shut-in / NEET for the majority the last 11 years, and a former fapaholic.

Oh, I've always pissed right after having a wank so I think I've immunised myself to this because I've never experienced it.

Post one alpha trait that you have, and then one beta trait that you have.

That's alright. I respect your decision and hope you have a nice evening.

>don't follow the crowd or give an inch to peer pressure

<am long-term NEET and spend the majority of my days on my computer in my childhood bedroom at my mum's house despite being 3 years away from age 30

Get a job lad, then you can spend the majority of your days in a job you hate then come home to spend the rest of your day on your computer in your childhood bedroom at your mum's house despite being 3 years away from age 30.

Its certainly gone great for me….

I did get a job a couple of years ago, only without the coming home to spend the rest of my day on my computer in my childhood bedroom at my mum's house. Instead, I came home to spend the rest of my day crashed out on my undersized bed with a rock hard mattress in the spare room at my dad's house despite being 6 years away from 30. I definitely prefer my current situation to that. Wageslavery, never again.

Because you got a crappy job.

Get a shit tier office job where you can finish your workload before 11:00am and then just browse the internet for the rest of the day.

I'm moving into a nice new office for work next month. A massive upgrade to our current one.

Sounds wageslaveish, but it's been rewarding watching and being part of a growing business that was operating in a storage container with only 3 employees just last year and now seeing how far we've come.

Or I could just not do that, still get 1/2 the money anyway thanks to our based welfare system (even more if I ever needed to live alone), and have 100% free time to spend as I please. Wageslavery simply can't compete with that. If I absolutely have to, I'll go back to it, but until then I'm alright. Really I'd prefer to be self-employed.

Do you really do anything that productive from 9-5?

I don't work around a schedule or anything, but I'm always making music or doing various other little projects. Here's a taste of a WIP track I've been working on since yesterday: https://files.catbox.moe/xk2nzs.mp3

I dreamt I discovered an artificial/alien intelligence that had enslaved humanity. I confronted it but face to face with this godlike being all I could do was sigh, turn around and walk out the door.

I like that a lot, not a big fan of the sample(?) that comes at 0:44 though.

I had a dream last night, the only thing I can remember from it is that I kept cooking things in the oven, then when I opened the oven to take them out I realised I had forgotten that I had put cartons of milk in there for storage and they had melted.

What did my subconscious mean by this?

Sounds like something that would be the soundtrack of a modern Theme Hospital reboot. And I don't mean that in a bad way.

Last time I put sax on a track was about 12 years ago, so I thought I'd give it another go. Definitely hard to get right.

File: 3dae50d940578ba⋯.jpg (168.35 KB, 640x640, 1:1, circle-of-fifths--15230162….jpg)

It uses a staple jazz progression, going anti-clockwise around the circle of fifths, which is essentially a series of "ii-V-I"s. The core of the progression for the most part is: Em7, A7, DM7, GM7, C#m7b5 (minor 7th with a flat fifth), F#7, Bm (sometimes he does Bm7 into a B7, which resolves nicely back to the E).

I've been playing it on and off recently as well. Who's making the /craftfeel/ server then?

I'd be well up for that.

File: f37f96f62f00121⋯.gif (1.76 KB, 225x300, 3:4, Gm7.11.gif)

Lad, are you sure that's a GM7? It doesn't sound like him when I play it. The rest is fine.

Your picture shows minor 7th, not Major 7th. He does pedal a 6th in there as well at times, but that's just ornamentation, functionally it's an M7 chord.

Let's do it.

Did any of you 'tismcraft lads play it in 2009?

I remember the /v/ threads about it when it first came out, and all the enthusiasm about what it could become when the very first survival mode news started coming out.

I played it in alpha, maybe around 2010-12. I'd consider it a great game for kids if you exclude the internet culture around it.

Right then. Who's going to make it happen? I don't know how to do it.

Neither do I

I nominate this lad.

I first played it in early 2011 just before they added beds, and I stopped playing it regularly around the time of the "adventure update". Since then I've dipped into it a handful of times, but not substantially until the last year or so. There's still a lot of stuff in survival that I've never seen or done.

I nominate one of our resident wageslaves with disposable income, because servers aren't free, and I am but a lowly NEET.

Just had a look at the versions released to see what version I would have first played, and as such the date. 0.0.19a would have been when I first downloaded the game, as this was the version before they added cloth and I remember that being added in. I also don't remember the game not having a hotbar, which was added in 0.0.19a.

Interestingly they were both released on the same day, so I may have literally downloaded it without wool in the morning and seen the update that evening.

I was playing alongside some people I knew from a Pokemon forum at the time, this was back on June 20 2009. We played a bunch in creative mode but had no real interest in survival.

Always cracks me up in anime/manga whenever they visit London, Paris, etc. and it's exclusively 18th century architecture, huge palaces, grand ballrooms, four-poster beds, and blonde-haired, blue-eyed people. Isn't that actually a thing? Paris Syndrome or something.

Supposedly, I think it was mostly just media making much ado about nothing for the sake of clicks, but I can imagine the reality of those places does slap naive tourists pretty hard. It's their own fault really, you can't expect a major city to be anything other than a shithole with a few token historical bits dotted around a soulless concrete jungle. With a small bit of research, they could have had a lovely time in the countless actual idyllic towns and villages that the UK and Europe as a whole has to offer, where the air is cleaner, the people are nicer, and things aren't nearly as expensive.

I went to Mayfair for a work trip in December. It wasn't anywhere near as bad as everyone here made it out to be.

It was painfully expensive but fortunately I paid for nothing but a tube ticket.

Lads, what disgusting things do you like eating?

There's a gross takeaway round here that sells a "Mexican Wrap". Basically it's chips, jalapeno peppers, chilli, garlic sauce, chicken kebab all put in a 1ft long wrap. It's vile but I love them.

I'm going to a gig later. Goodbye,

Just got back from the gym lads.

Today was the first time I stopped my running on the treadmill because I was too tired to keep going, instead of because my legs were hurting. I guess they're finally used to running.

Been doing 1-1 interval so far, and it's going quite well. Hit 6 speed on the treadmill towards the end of the session, although did most of it at 5.

Knees are hurting a bit now mind, may have gone a bit too hard on it.

This is a great video.

I enjoyed watching them last night. I didn't like some of the harder martial industrial stuff but their Sound of Music covers were absolutely fantastic. Everyone in the crowd just stood and watched like zombies, which I thought was a bit autistic. Aren't you supposed to dance to music? There were about three people who were actually moving.

Doesn't exactly sound like a dance act to me lad. That said, todays average music-goers range between image-obsessed normalcunts and painfully uptight autists, neither of whom are particularly concerned with dancing or going mental at a music event. You'll be lucky to see them half-heartedly put their hands in the air once or twice.

They're definitely above 6 without any doubt.

They're possibly a 7 but could be considered higher.

How do you host a minecraft server?

As far as I researched, you can pay monthly to a service that specialises in minecraft servers, and they'll set it all up for you and give you an interface to work with, otherwise you have to pay for server space some other way and set it all up yourself. The main factor to take into account seemed to be the allotment of RAM they give you, which will dictate how many people you can host at once and how many server-based mods you can run. Mojang have their own "realms" thing, but apparently it's more expensive and not as good as using a third party service.

Anyone still practicing meditation?

I've been at it for a few months now, admittedly not as frequently or consistently as I'd like, but I still feel like I'm experiencing some benefits. My headspace seems less chaotic, and I'm more aware of my thoughts (I'm getting especially better at not latching onto the negative/distorted ones, this can be partially attributed to CBT). It also makes getting to sleep easier.

No, this is why pretty much every civilization has had to enforce it by law.

Do you consider civilisation to be our natural structure?

My colleague told me quite an amusing story.

When he moved into his new house, it was just a standard terraced house with no back garden and just a concrete yard. In the middle of it was a rectangular brick structure about 3ft high. He wanted it gone because it was weird, but he was mostly curious about what was inside, he was hoping it was going to be some kind of time capsule or just something interesting.

Inside were two dead dogs. It was a pet grave. He had to call the council to remove the two decomposing dogs from this weird brick shrine.

There is nothing strange about this.

How many dogs do you have entombed in your back garden, lad?

One is buried with a few bricks and chimes on top of the spot. Feels good to not be a nigger.

I started an archery course today, it was good.

Buried, yes.

Entombed in bricks on a concrete yard? No.

I think I've become a normie.

We're only "dying" in the sense that we've not been posting much recently for whatever reason, but we still have the same number of people visiting here as we did two years ago. You can see this by looking at the recent minecraft poll, which got 8 votes. Assuming nobody voted twice, that's consistent with almost every non-manipulated and non-crossposted poll we've done for the last 2 and a half years.

>Asked Sep 21, 2016

>Hope you are all doing ok

I'm alright lad. I bought myself an analogue synthesizer about 3 weeks ago, Behringer Neutron for £260 (and that's new, not second hand), so I've mainly been playing around with that. It really is a quality bit of kit, all metal chassis, solid metal shaft pots, and it sounds excellent. You couldn't get anything like this from anyone else without at least adding another 0 onto the price, the price-hiking bastards.

Nice to hear from you mate, I'm glad you got over the shit that was bothering you back then. I'm slowly getting better too, my depression is getting less severe, and I don't drink much at all anymore. Things kind of came to a head in late 2017 when I was drinking a litre of gin a day and when I stopped I got delirium tremens and had to spend four or five days in hospital, gave me some much needed perspective. The plan now is to go back to uni this year only to actually study instead of drinking and doing drugs alone in my room all day and going weeks without eating, looking forward to it.

That is a seriously nice looking bit of kit. As an aside though, it kind of triggers me that anything that uses a particle for it's naming always fucks up the image. Like seriously, this thing is called a neutron yet it's using some mystery atom with one proton and three electrons for its logo, has anyone ever heard of something like this existing? Protonmail also does a similar thing, where their loading screen logo is an electron whizzing around a single nucleic particle, presumably proton, which is a lot more forgiveable because it's a depiction of protium, the most common hydrogen isotope. Electron, the software development tool, also does the same shit. One proton orbitted by three electrons. I'll never understand.

Today I walked past some teenage girls who were sitting on some grass and their bikes were on the side of the pavement, not in the way. One of them shouted at me "sorry about the bikes.. person" and they laughed at me. Obviously a female cannot let a beta male walk by without fucking with him; still it was too much for them to acknowledge me as a male, just 'person'. The bus driver gave me a child ticket too, even though I'm 21.

I'm 22 and still get child tickets. Also one time quite recently when I went to buy beer, the young girl behind the counter ID'd me and when she looked at it she gasped and said "fucking hell, you're older than me". My consolation is that I'll be grateful for my slow ageing when I reach middle age. Enjoy it lad, it may seem like a curse, but in the long run it's a blessing.

I don't think looking young will matter if we start balding.

well I'd rather look like a bald 30 year old at 40 than a bald thirty year old at 20, my hairline's fine as it stands, anyways.

Went the extra mile for the customers today lads. What's everyone up to?

>if we start balding

I'm still here lad. Despite having a bit of a drinking problem back in Uni, and being unable to leave bed some days I'm doing quite well now.

I gave up getting drunk completely on December 1st last year, I've had a few pints since but I haven't been drunk. No more than 3 pints in a day. I've also taken a healthier approach to life, and it's going well for me, all I'm drinking is water now.

I don't feel anxious anymore, and while my job isn't something that inspires passion in me, I don't feel hopeless. I could honestly say I'm the happiest I've ever been.

I'm glad to hear it! I've been borderline drunk one time this year, and other than that I've been more or less doing the same as you, usually 1-2 pints no more than once or twice a week, this month it's been even less. I'm inclined to pretty drastic fluctuations in mood, but when I take a depressive dive it usually only lasts a day or even less, when it used to last for months before. I'm not satisfied with my current station in life and have ambitions and goals that I want to realise, but I think it's fair to say I too am at the happiest I've been since I was a child.

>I'm inclined to pretty drastic fluctuations in mood, but when I take a depressive dive it usually only lasts a day or even less, when it used to last for months before.

I know that feeling lad. I've only felt super down once this year, and it was nowhere near as bad as it was before. I still fear hitting a patch that puts me out of commission mind.

Music expert, I want to become an unsuccessful folk punk musician. Please tell me how I sing like this, play guitar like this and write this kind of music please.

Good job lad.

I used to drink a 70cl bottle of vodka every night. Now I've been drunk maybe 2-3 times since January 2018.

Buy an acoustic guitar and a microphone, learn 4 chords, then shout into the microphone. I'm not sure you'll be able to write lyrics like that without being an edgy "fuck u mum, drugs r cool" teenager.

But what chords? Tell me the chords.

I'll help write some lyrics.

Want to be in my band?

Any group of I, IV, V, and vi will give you the infamous "four chords", so if you're playing in the key of C Major for example, that'd be:

>C Major, F Major, G Major, A minor

or in G major:

>G Major, C Major, D Major, E minor

Remember to limit yourself to only playing them as power chords and/or bar chords, otherwise it won't be shit punk.

Okay, thanks.

Will buying a cheaper acoustic guitar make me sound more punk?

And how do I get my voice to sound more run down and angry?

And whats the best way to record my new music?

And finally, how do I start to build my name up and get a fanbase?

Thinking about calling my new band "fuck you Mom".

>Will buying a cheaper acoustic guitar make me sound more punk?

No, you just have to play more sloppily.

>how do I get my voice to sound more run down and angry?

Cigarettes, alcohol, drugs, and lots of shouting.

>whats the best way to record my new music?

Doesn't matter, punk fans don't care if it sounds awful so neither should you.

>how do I start to build my name up and get a fanbase?

That's considered selling out in punk world.

Thanks for your help, anon. I'm hoping this time next year I'll be an unsuccessful punk musician (because I don't want to be a sellout).

I'm set on the name "fuck you mom", but how do I build an image? I want to make myself more punk.

A cheap acoustic guitar is probably too much, just steal one off a homeless man, or stick some elastic bands around a tissue box.

Your voice needs to be really fucked, what id suggest is holding some whiskey in your throat for as long as you can, swallow it but not all the way. It helps to start the day with some.

My suggestion for recording would be to buy a old Sony Erikson phone. Since the company is now defunct, you can't be accused of selling out, you can use that to record some music.

There's one key difference between fake punks and real punks, and real punks have seen black flag live.

Also lad, do you have an accent that you can take advantage of to sound even more authentically punk?

Just spent 12 hours having really vivid dreams in a deep sleep and now my neck and back are stiff as fuck lads. I really need a new mattress.

Spent the last 8 hours sorting my room out with my mum, we've cleared loads of space and I can now easily get to my decks again, as well as see the floor.

That's nice to hear. Any particular reason you wanted a clean up lad?

Find anything unexpected?

Well, I couldn't access a large portion of my room because there was so much stuff stacked up, and a lot of dust had built up over the years. I've been planning to replace my desks, but couldn't do so with all the stuff in the way. The way the desks are now leaves me too cramped in my little PC corner, and the small desk with my PC on it is currently only held up by a small block of industrial foam wedged between this desk and my other one. If I removed the foam, the desk would collapse, because I had to remove the central supports to fit my monster PC down there.

>Find anything unexpected?

Nothing amazing, just things I'd not seen in a while or had forgotten about.

My new mattress arrives on Saturday.

I can finally get rid of my old petri dish of a mattress.

Do you lads regularly engage in philosophical thought?

I know there's a few anons here who used to have a drinking problem but no longer do. Do any of you still get intense cravings to drink sometimes? I feel like this even 1 year since I stopped drinking. I don't ever cave in, but it's a bit shit realizing that I may have to deal with cravings the rest of my life.

Whenever it happens, I just imagine the process that I'd have to go through to get drunk. I'd have to get my keys, get my wallet, get in my car, drive to some shop, buy my drink, drive back home, put all my keys back and then I'd have my drink. After I think about all that I just have to remind myself that I'll be fine if I don't get my keys. It's stupid but it makes me feel better.

Lad, I've just picked up my acoustic. Post me a nice chilled out chord progression to play.

I agree.

There's not a much more to say about it other than "it's a synth", with a cheesy "bouncy" sounding patch similar to a lot of pop songs of the day (i.e. "Billy Ocean - When The Going Gets Tough", "Michael Jackson - The Way You Make Me Feel"). Later on in the track a real bass guitar gets layered on top of it, and that's about it.

The real redpill is that the original 12" / maxi CD release of Like A Prayer contained alternate mixes that were less cheesy and superior to the original, like the "Churchapella".

File: 98925ee3b229cc3⋯.png (182.69 KB, 2000x1903, 2000:1903, 2000px-Harmonic_partials_o….png)

The TL;DR is "because harmony and harmonics are maths and physics", but I'll try and break it down for you from the very beginning in this absolute essay because I think it's an interesting subject. Keep in mind that this is mostly all naturally occurring phenomena, with a couple of thousand years' worth of man-made ways and conventions to describe them, so don't get too caught up with all the seemingly arbitrary terminology. The phenomena can be understoond without knowing all of the words and symbols commonly used to convey them.

Sound is created by physical objects vibrating, which causes compressions and rarefactions in air pressure. When something repeatedly goes back and forth between two states (like the case with sound as it compresses, rarefacts, compresses, rarefacts, …), we describe it as "oscillating".

A note refers to a sound that has a definable "fundamental frequency", meaning a certain element of the sound oscillates at a constant, measurable rate. Let's take the "A" note above "middle C", which at concert pitch (an arbitrarily agreed upon standard, not a natural principle), oscillates 440 times a second, or 440 Hertz (Hz). With any given frequency, multiples of that frequency will align perfectly with it over time; these are defined as "harmonics". I'll try to cover a little bit of the harmonic series, or at least how it relates to music, as this is fairly crucial to understanding how chords work internally, and why they are harmonious:

So going back to 440 Hz (let's consider this tone our "Tonic", which is a musical theory term for "root note"). A frequency of 880 Hz (exactly 2 times 440) will fit into 440 Hz exactly twice. The "interval" (distance between one note and another) between any given frequency, and one that is exactly double, is described in music theory as being an "Octave". For simplicity's sake, we give these notes the same letter; so if 440 Hz is A, then 880 Hz is also A, as is 220 Hz (440 divided by 2) and 1760 Hz (880 times 2). When these notes are played at the same time, it sounds "perfect"; there is no perceivable "beating" (or "dissonance", the opposite of harmony) whatsoever, and they are in near perfect "unison", so it is therefore the Octave is considered the most "harmonious" of intervals.

A frequency of 1320 Hz (3 times 440 Hz) will fit into 440 exactly 3 times, and this is described as being the "Dominant", or a "perfect fifth interval" in the "diatonic scale" (the diatonic scale is the standard 7-tone musical scale, commonly labelled as A through G. If A = 1st, B = 2nd, …, then E = 5th, so that's the fifth interval relative to A. It sits right in the middle of a Tonic and its Octave). This is second most perfect interval, and it also does not have any perceivable beating when played alongside the Tonic, which is why it gets called the "perfect 5th".

A frequency that is 4 times our Tonic, is another Octave. It's exactly double the previous Octave (which was 2 times the Tonic, 4 is double 2), so it is also considered the same note, only at a higher pitch.

A frequency that is 5 times our Tonic is described as the "Mediant", or the "Major 3rd". This sits right in the middle of our Tonic and our Dominant, our 1st and our 5th. It is less perfect than the previous intervals, so it doesn't get that label, but it is still very harmonious and has hardly any beating. When played together with our 1st and 5th, we get our first chord, the "Major chord". It sounds harmonious, because it uses the two most perfect intervals found in the naturally occurring harmonic series. If we were to have C as our Tonic, the Dominant would be G, and the Mediant would be E.

Next is 6 times the Tonic, which is called the "Subtonic", or "minor 7th". This sits between the 5th and the octave, and sounds a little less harmonious than the previous intervals. When played alongside a Major chord, we call it a "Dominant 7th" chord. This is still harmonious, but sounds like it needs resolving.

With 7 times the Tonic, you get the "Leading Tone", or "Major 7th", which sits between the minor 7th and the octave. When played alongside a Major chord, we get a "Major 7th" chord. This is harmonious, but wasn't particularly useable until relatively modern times due to the way notes were tuned, but that's a whole other story.

8 times the Tonic is, as you might have already guessed, another octave, being exactly double the previous one.

(part 1 of 2)

File: cdf67f171002c6e⋯.jpg (90.8 KB, 1280x335, 256:67, 32-key-keyboard-1.jpg)

As you go on, the harmonics between the multiples of ones we've previously covered becomes increasingly less harmonious. In the diatonic scale we've defined the 1st, 3rd, 5th, major 7th, and the 8th (the octave), so that only leaves the major 2nd, perfect 4th, and the 6th, all of which you'll soon find as you keep going up the harmonic series. If we start from C as our Tonic, the diatonic scale makes up all the white notes on the keyboard, so suddenly their layout and spacing shouldn't seem so arbitrary. If you're wondering why the perfect 4th is named as such, it's because the 4th and the Octave make a 5th interval (In C, look at the relationship between F and the C above; it's the same as C and the G above), so it sounds just as perfect as the perfect 5th.

In the "chromatic scale", there are 12 tones, and it includes all the previous, plus a minor 2nd, minor 3rd, augmented 4th / diminished 5th, and the minor 6th. If you start from C, these are the black notes on the keyboard, also known as the "accidentals". These aren't very harmonious at all for the most part. The augmented 4th / diminished 5th, also known as the "Tritone", is the most dissonant interval. It is just about the furthest from harmonious you can possibly get, and it sounds horrible alongside the Tonic.

Now the harmonic series goes on infinitely, but the harmonics get closer and closer together as you go further along. Notes that are too close to other notes sound redundant to our ears, so Western Music settled on 12 tones as being enough. The point at which notes are considered to be redundant varies from culture to culture however, there's music in India that has as many as 22 tones, and music in Africa that has as little as 5.

Chords, simply put, are combinations of notes played simultaneously, that work together to invoke different feelings, moods, and ideas. Using what we now know about harmonics and how they make up our musical intervals, we can see that different collections of notes will have audibly (and measurably, this is not subjective) different characteristics to others, based on how harmonious they are to a given root note. We can see why a Major chord (1st + Major 3rd + perfect 5th : C, E, G) sounds more perfect and harmonious than say, a diminished 7th (1st + minor 3rd + tritone + Major 6th : C, E flat, G flat, A). If you were to pick notes at random, there's a good chance you'd be picking notes that don't work together harmonically, and sound dissonant, as the various tones conflict and beat against eachother.

The next level is applying the same knowledge in order to understand more complex chords, and learning how stringing together different series of chords will invoke different feelings and moods based on how the intervals of one chord relate to the next. That's obviously a much vaster topic, and it gets a lot more subjective, so it's difficult to cover without writing a literal book or two, unless you want to know something specific.

Hopefully that wasn't too convoluted, and helped uncover some of the mystery surrounding notes, chords, and music.

Correction: 6 times the tonic is obviously the same as 3 times the tonic but an octave up. 7 times the tonic is the "harmonic 7th", which sits between the diatonic "Subtonic" and "Leading Tone". My descriptions of those are still accurate, just not their placement.

This is kind of interesting.

I'm just confused why playing notes in a certain order can make a song, but playing other notes in a certain order will just sound like a mess.

Also, how is it that some songs can sound "sad" and some "happy"?

was going to make one but the griefer saw to that.

I'm nominating this lad for our highly sought after Poster of the Week award.

I'm afraid I'll be giving my vote to this poster:

>I'm just confused why playing notes in a certain order can make a song, but playing other notes in a certain order will just sound like a mess

When you have certain notes in a certain order, we call it a "melody". Melodies only make musical sense to us when they abide by the principles of harmony I laid out above. The most common technique in writing a melody is to simply move up or down a particular scale, one note to the next. Take "Ode to Joy" for example, if I play it in the key of C, the first few notes are "E E F G G F E D C C D E E, D D". Every note neighbours the next in the Major scale, with the occasional repeated note just so it makes more rhythmic sense.

The next most common technique is to move up and down by notes within a chord. Take the very start of Mozart's "Eine Kleine Nachtmusick" for a perfect example (look it up, you'll immediately recognise it). It's just the notes contained within G Major, followed by the notes within D dominant 7th. You can also leap by larger intervals, although this is typically used more sparingly than the previous two techniques, and hardly at all the further you go back into Western music history. In the days of Gregorian chants, they virtually only ever moved by single steps up and down a scale, and that's a large part of its defining characteristics.

Using a combination of those three techniques to move around a scale, and changing the scale you're using when it makes harmonic sense to, is virtually all you need to start composing good melodies, whether it's Classical, Jazz, or Pop/Contemporary. It's rarely ever a case of pulling notes out of a hat and hoping for the best; even people who don't know a thing about music theory will be using all of the above principles and techniques, simply because they've learned to speak the language of music through experience, without dissecting or analysing it.

>Also, how is it that some songs can sound "sad" and some "happy"?

From my research, the emotions we associate with certain intervals, chords, or progressions, is predominantly cultural, and not an inherent property of the sound itself. For example, there are many cultures that heavily use the minor 2nd interval (D flat in relation to C), but in Western music its hardly ever used, except in music that most western listeners would deem highly "exotic", so as cultures we obviously interpret it in different ways.

However, there are still ways that the natural properties of the sound do play into our emotions, such as going from less harmonic chords to more harmonic chords. Music is all about "tension" and "release", and we can use the harmonic makeup of certain chords to convey that, like G dominant 7th into C Major, or E diminished 7th into F minor. Additionally, we can make use of timbral (textural; soft vs hard, piano vs trumpet, etc.) and rhythmic differences; playing soft and slow will likely invoke feelings such as sadness, sorrow, sentimentalism, or tranquility, whereas playing hard and fast can sound joyful, energetic, frantic, or crazy.

This is a lot more my opinion than anything else, but I believe this is because of how the sounds relate to core parts of our human experience, such as heart rate and pace of our physical movement. A quiet stroll through a meadow puts us in a very different state to fleeing from danger, and the timbre and rhythm of music can reflect those feelings back at us.

Really appreciate your effort in explaining this to me.

No problem lad, I enjoy sharing the things I've learned over the years. A lot of it isn't easily found online, and even when it is, it's often either too simplified and doesn't really answer the question, or it's too complicated and requires too much prerequisite knowledge to follow (music theory on wikipedia, in a nutshell).

Don't worry lad, I have a habit of doing the same thing. Ended up going to the one for my current job at least.

Doesn't work at all lad, unless you meant G Major, and even then it sounds incoherent and directionless. If you rearrange it, you get the fairly common Pop/Rock chord progression of C Major, E Major, A minor, and then it would usually be followed by either an F Major or a D minor. You can use the G Major whenever you want to "come back home" to either C Major or A minor.

Right then, I see. Strong silent types are you.

I've had Soul Reaver on PS1 since I was a kid, I remember buying it at the shop around 18 years ago, but I never beat it until just now. Starcraft 2

Should I stream FEAR?

For me, it's 15mg of yohimbine HCL and an hour of fasted swimming.

I'm neet

I'm neet also

I'm NEET too.

I don't know about streaming it, but I did really like that game when it came out. It was filled to the brim with "TECHNOLOGY", and it had some of the most realistic graphics I'd ever seen up to that point. Still looks excellent too, hardly aged at all in my opinion.

I played many hours of it yesterday; it is indeed technically impressive, more so than any other FPS I've tried. The mid 2000s seemed like a time, at least on PC with stuff like HL2 and STALKER, where developers actually had ambition rather than just following convention. I especially like the dust effects generated from gunfights, never seen anything like that before.

From the days of graphic adventure games through to the release of Crysis it was pretty much a race to see who could pull off the most realistic graphics and implement as many nifty little "developers really thought of everything" features as possible. It died once the whole "AAA" thing started, former PC platform devs began primarily targeting the aging 7th gen consoles rather than the latest and greatest PC hardware, as well as trying to capture the "casual" market (AKA lowest common denominator normalfags that watch lots of telly and films) instead of technology freaks like us that had been regularly buying games for years up to that point.

To really put it in perspective, F.E.A.R. came out 14 years ago as of 2019. 14 years before 2005 was 1991, the same year Sonic the Hedgehog 1 came out, and when the best graphics were found in arcades or on the Amiga. There's no game on this planet in 2019 that comes anywhere near making F.E.A.R. look or play as primitive as an Amiga game did in 2005.

Unequivocally false, the only keyboard instrument that has a fighting chance against the bass guitar in the funk olympics is the Clavinet. It's raw and it's got bite, unlike a Hammond which, even when overdriven, is too clean and smooth to get down and dirty like a Clavinet can.

How we all feeling lads, are we doing okay?

How about the long bank holiday weekend, I know it probably doesn't mean as much to our NEET posters, but at the very least some of your families must have had some schedule changes to throw you off.

Personally, I've recently bought some warhammer stuff. Got the Soul wars box since I wanted the ghosts. Going to do some test painting on some of the stormcast minis this weekend, since they're just something extra that came along to me. Hopefully I can use them to get somewhat acceptable at painting before I touch the ghosts.

I'm going to my grandparent's house with my dad in an hour or so. My nieces and that will be there too, doing an easter egg hunt I think.

Need to go buy eggs for my family

Left that a bit late haven't you mate

This is my long weekend (unrelated to easter) so I'm pretty happy with the way it's landed, especially considering the fact that the weather is supposed to be beautiful for the next few days.

>have dual-citizenship since I was born in the UK but parents moved to the US when I was 8 months old

>finished uni and wanting to be a web developer

>only job experience are internships

>parents are planning on perma moving back to the UK right after I graduate

What should I expect and am I fucked or no??

I'll prepare your NEET club badge in advance for you lad.

Where in the UK?

South England

Music master, I decided I don't want to be punk anymore. It's too hard.

Please teach me exactly how to play music like this,

Welcome to Hell.

Could be good or bad, depending on what you want. It's generally one of the nicer parts of the UK weatherwise, but also on the more expensive side to live.

Get yourself a portfolio made up and you'll do okay looking for webdev jobs probably, it's not as if qualifications matter in that sort of thing if you can prove yourself.

I've taken to sleeping with my arms wrapped around one of my pillows.

Im considering getting a body pillow as a result. Is there ever a way of coming back from a dakimakura, and how would I explain one to my parents?

Also it seems like the only non-sexualised ones I can find are of dudes, and that would probably be more weird. I don't want to fall asleep hugging Goku.

You can get plain white ones.

Specifically, it's near Reading and Basingstoke. It's going to be in the more rural areas. I already did some job searching and there are webdev/front-end jobs in Reading.

How good is public transportation or do I need a car in this case?

>reading and basingstoke

Public transport is a bit grim in the UK lad, I'd advise against it if you could.

Really? I heard it's really great.

I've had this pair of pyjamas I'm wearing for 13 years now.

They still fit perfectly and aren't worn out at all.

Any public transport system is great compared to the chimp express you have in FOYland

This is true tbh.

Anyway, anything outside of London is unreliable and filled with Junkies. The tube within London itself is pretty good in the sense it'll get you where you need to go, and the trains are super frequent. However its still full of weirdos and junkies.

You were wrong. I've now changed my sleeping schedule to 11PM to 6AM every day. Usually I wake up at 5AM though, but I just go back to sleep for the last hour.

At the moment I sleep from around 7pm to 5-6am.

Public transport is decent if you're going to/from London, since the entirety of our nations infrastructure is based around London. If going anywhere else its shit.

Will my insurance cost go up or down if I tell them I have anime stickers on my car? Should I tell them I'm unemployed or a philosopher-NEET?

How do you fund a car as a NEET?

I don't.

I had an amazing night last night. I ruined Endgame for so many people.

What did you do lad?

Made a reddit account and spent a long time PMing people the ending to Endgame as well as posting it in hundreds of threads.

It put a smile on my dial. I managed to ruin the ending for one person who said they were about to see the film in 3 hours time, they sent me a message saying "fuck you, i hope you die". It's a dick move but it was very funny.

Good lad, they deserve it.

Do any of you lads own a fleshlight/onahole?

I was thinking about getting one but I don't know if it'd be worth it.

Bought one when I was 21 at the worst point in my life. Eventually I cut it up into little pieces.

Wouldn't recomend.

No, that's not a path I want to go down.

Lads, how is this nearly a decade old?

Feels like only a few years since I was 17 and posting on /v/ 14 hours a day minimum.

The worse fact for me is that the original is apparently nearly 20 years old. "20 years ago" still makes me think of the mid-80s, not the bloody year 2000. Next year, the PS2 will turn the same age that Pac-Man was when the PS2 came out, for christ's sake. It's just not on lads, somebody has got to do something about this.

For a while, I kept writing the year 2004 when I tried to write the date, I was stuck in that year for a bit. That changed and I currently make the mistake of writing 2013.

I keep thinking I'm 17, which I assume is because that's the age I left school and became a real hikki.

The time between present day and the release of GTA Vice City, is longer than the time between the release of Vice City and the time the game is actually set (1986).

If a GTA game were to be released with the same amount of time period going back as Vice City was, it would only be set in 2003.

A very painful truth, also San Andreas would be set in 2007 if it came out today. In fact, next year GTA IV will be set the same length of time ago as San Andreas was upon it's release.

Love you lads.

Got out of work an hour early tonight.

Was able to go to the shop and get some beer (they stop selling alcohol in shops at 10pm in Scotland) since I'm off the next two days.

It's been a long time since I actively exercised, but now that the weather is getting better and it's getting warmer I'm going to try and commit to it again.

I'm going out for a jog right now and I'm going to try and keep at it, if not every night then at least every night after work (4 nights a week).

I managed to do decently last year until winter kicked in, so here's hoping I can do even better this year.

As a note to myself, I'm 13st7lbs right now, let's try and lose at least one stone by the winter.

How can we bring an end to industrial society?

Move all the factories over to poorer countries so we can become a post-industrial information society, like we did decades ago. If you mean end industrial societies entirely, a worldwide nuclear holocaust might do the trick, for a short period at least.

Wipe out all non-darkies

Only whites and asians can comprehend industrial technology enough to maintain society beyond pre-industrial levels.

>new girl at the local shop smiles at me when I buy my stuff

new oneitis lads

She smiles at everyone lad, it's part of her job.

When I worked in retail I was put on "disciplinary action" and was threatened to have my bonus taken away due to my lack of smiling and proper interaction with customers.

If they just asked me nicely, I probably would have put more effort into my job but I'm incapable of doing anything if someone tells me to do it. I'm far too stubborn.

On one occason, they took me into the meeting room and the managment tried to give me lessons on how to smile properly. It was quite humiliating when they kept telling me I wasn't doing it properly.

It's amazing how I was never fired from that job. I got in a fight with a warehouse lad and one one occasion came into work drunk and fell asleep with absolutely no issues but they made a massive deal about smiling and chatting.

What are we all up to this evening then.

My computer recently stopped working, and at first I was quite upset, but I've been happier and more productive since it happened and am starting to think it might be a blessing in disguise. I've just finished putting up two Peter Scott original paintings on my wall, which were given to me by my mum, who got them off a friend who goes to autions. Now I'm in the process of putting away all my computer stuff to make space on my desk, which I'll be using to read at. After that I'll probably play my guitar for a bit, and maybe even have a cheeky glass of water. Speaking of water, I recently made 8pm the cutoff because I've been getting up far too much in the night to piss. Do you lads do that, or do you sleep right through?

Nice one lad.

>Do you lads do that, or do you sleep right through?

I sleep right through. I drink water all day, right up to the point of going to bed, yet I never need to get up in the night to use the toilet. I always make sure to go right before I sleep. Speaking of sleep, I've been up since midnight, so I'm off to bed. Goodnight lads.

Due to his own original special nature, the Jew cannot possess a religious institution, if for no other reason because he lacks idealism in any form, and hence belief in a hereafter is absolutely foreign to him.

And a religion in the Aryan sense cannot be imagined which lacks the conviction of survival after death in some form.

Indeed, the Talmud is not a book to prepare a man for the hereafter, but only for a practical and profitable life in this world.

A job opening has come up at work for a senior poo inspector. I'm thinking of going for it, but I'm not sure I'll be able to cope with the workload. Anyone who works a similar job able to give advice?

A lot of the time, senior poo inspectors are paid only pennies more an hour than the regular poo inspectors, but are expected to inspect a lot more poo, and make sure that others are properly inspecting poo themselves.

In cases like this, it's in no way worth doing it. If however, there's a lot less inspecting poo but just more making sure others are inspecting poo correctly, then as long as you're okay with that dynamic with people who were formerly your peers, I'd say go for it.

It's also worth considering whether it would mean working extra hours, and do you think the extra pay (if there is any) is worth that time. I'm personally of the opinion that generally it's not, and only tend to do overtime when I think the poo is particularly important and really needs inspecting. Note that sometimes the extra time worked isn't always obvious, and sometimes despite it never being clearly stated, you'll be expected to inspect poo on your breaks due to your seniority.

just found a bottle of ketchup in the fridge that expired in april 2017

Heh, that's nothing kiddo

We have some cloves from 2007 and some salt from the late 90s.

The internet convinced me for a long time that owning property is financially impossible, it's really not and the more I look into it I should be able to afford a house next year.

I think it's just propaganda from asshurt southernfags who will be living with their mum until they are 35 or renting their whole lives.

Fortunately in the good North, you can get a 3 bedroom terraced house for around £90-100k or a small flat for about £45k. And why do southerners think their part of the country is better again?
