8ch Attention-Hungry Games 69

Last Round: >>92828

Archive of Past Rounds: https://mega.nz/#F!BA8V0KYD!eRw01c3zLKSa3wzSEHE00g (Updated to Round 66.)

Hello /sudo/. A long time ago, CodeMonkey wanted to try a Hunger Games event for advertising boards using the global announcement feature. Now only 1 day late thanks to a shitty sleep schedule.

For the 8chan Attention-Hungry Games, any board with less than 300 users can nominate themselves to participate, with up to 48 boards being able to participate (or we can go to 24 or 36 if we don't get enough boards). These 48 or so boards compete on a Hunger Games simulator hosted on BrantSteele. The current code for the regular events as of this writing is at http://brantsteele.net/hungergames/r.php?c=lBMdNnlk which is based off of http://brantsteele.net/hungergames/r.php?c=FlMMyAqW.

The Mansion code that I used once but regretted using afterwards is at http://brantsteele.net/hungergames/r.php?c=9nWM8wfc from >>>/hungergames/17115

Anyway, the winner gets to be advertised as a global announcement for about a week.

As for the requirements for signing up:

1. No boards that promote raiding other 8chan boards.

2. Must have less than 300 active users at the start of the game.

3. Can't have won the hunger games in the past week. Last round's winner is >>>/d/

4. Need to submit a SFW sentence that advertises their board that CodeMonkey can put in the global announcement. (NSFW boards are welcome to join, but the announcement should be SFW). Failure to do so will result in anons deciding your sentence via dubs, usually to your detriment. CodeMonkey will be the one to determine what is and what isn't SFW as he controls the global announcements.

5. It is recommended you post a picture with your nomination, and that picture should be square as it will be stretched otherwise. I will determine the gender of you tribute based on the picture. If I can't tell, I am defaulting to M. Also, MLP images will be ignored unless it came from a MLP board, if the BO approves of it, or from a certain image for /suicide/ until their BO says otherwise as they had that certain image before I added this part of the rule.

6. If a BO of a board does not want to participate, please don't nominate it. Board Owners, if you don't want to participate but someone nominated you, please let me know before the start of the round and I will remove it from the list. As of now, /miku/ and /jp/ have asked not to participate.

7. Nominate only 1 board per IP hash per post. For posts that nominate more than 1 board and an IP hash nominating multiple boards, I will take the first board and ignore the rest, and I will know if you are samefagging. For those with VPNs, note that someone may be using the same VPN as you when nominating, which means they may have the same IP Hash and I can't distinguish VPN users from normal ones.

8. Once a round concludes, please wait until the next thread is created before you nominate a board.

The next round will likely start Monday somewhere between 9am and 11am ET as Sunday doesn't work much considering last round.

With that all being said, nominate your boards now and suggest some events for either code if you want (or even better, put your events into the mansion code since I won't mind people messing with that code. Just let me know if you do update it). Also, if I missed anything, let me know so I can correct the OP for next time.

Sunlight on Sunshine

About Sunshine

Earlier, Sunshine came to my attention again after the source code for it was posted on freech's /intb/ board (https://archive.is/6sPs7#selection-2161.0-2205.53). Since users were concerned about it, I investigated the Sunshine code and looked back through my logs to figure out exactly when it was created, why it was created, for what purpose, and exactly what it does.

When?

Sunshine was created on October 9, 2015.

Why?

On October 8, 2015, the 8chan Administrator (who, at the time, was Hotwheels) received an email from the American authorities, who were concerned about a post on 8chan threatening an attack against a school in the Houston area (http://archive.is/lVsJe). Because of their incompetence, the 8chan Admin received a scanned picture of a photocopy of a printed 8chan post (pic related). The post in the picture (dated October 1, 2015) indeed contained a threat against a school in the Houston area, but due to the bureaucracy of the authorities, it arrived approximately a week too late and the original post had already been deleted.

Purpose

Sunshine was created by Hotwheels on October 9, 2015 after we discussed a way to make sure kids didn't get killed. It was meant to help prevent potential school shootings in the future if the shooter(s) happened to post specific threats on 8chan (i.e., bomb threats, shootings, etc.). Sunshine was neither an imposition nor a request by third parties. The pros of Sunshine were believed to outweigh the cons.

What Does It Do?

Sunshine takes the IP address and message of a poster, pads it with a few bytes of junk data, encrypts it using a RSA pub key, then stores the encrypted data. This data remains in encrypted form with decryption only possible by Hotwheels. With the way it is set up, nobody will be able to read anything on the Sunshine database unless they get access to Hotwheels' laptop.

Sunshine Security

When creating Sunshine, Hotwheels used a 2048-bit RSA public/private key pair with the openssl_private_decrypt() and openssl_public_encrypt() functions. The public key was stored on the server as sunshine.pem and the private key was stored on Hotwheels' laptop offsite - precisely because Hotwheels thought 8chan could be hacked one day (it was and here we are). Hotwheels told me which folder the key was in on his laptop in case he ever suddenly died and I needed to use Sunshine.

When Was It Used?

8chan gets around half a dozen requests per year from the authorities, mostly because of threats. Usually the authorities are quick and the data is still on the boards. According to my records, Sunshine was successfully used exactly once to help the Australian authorities.

How Long Was Sunshine Active?

Sunshine ran from its inception until early 2016, a period of turmoil for 8chan. During the Great Posting Crisis, it was culled to gain performance and improve posting. Sunshine was re-enabled in September 2016 and remained active until April 1, 2017. Sunshine is now disabled and will remain disabled on 8chan.

The Way Forward

I will be open-sourcing 8chan again and Sunshine will be included as a commit with instructions for any future imageboard admins who might want to use it. I have since asked Hotwheels to destroy the Sunshine private key and, on April 4, 2017 at exactly 09:56am GMT, Hotwheels destroyed it, thus ensuring Sunshine can never be unencrypted.

Of course, I have chat logs and emails to back this up, which is why I am able to give you so many details on such short notice.

Now that this is out of the way, I have mod.php to fix, boards to restore, and a website to run.

Edit vs Images

I don't suppose at some point we can be given the mod ability to change images on posts. Right now all we can do is delete/spoiler the image or delete the whole post. It would be nice if we could just upload an entirely new image. Obviously, the post would reflect it - similar to how people know that a post has been edited, but have it say something like "Image edited by <account> on <date>".

8ch Attention-Hungry Games 68

Last Round: >>92394

Archive of Past Rounds: https://mega.nz/#F!BA8V0KYD!eRw01c3zLKSa3wzSEHE00g (Updated to Round 66.)

Hello /sudo/. A long time ago, CodeMonkey wanted to try a Hunger Games event for advertising boards using the global announcement feature. I really should not skip weeks and I am sorry for skipping last week, but my grandma was in the ICU for most of last week before passing away and her funeral was yesterday. Shit really sucks.

The current code for the regular events as of this writing is at http://brantsteele.net/hungergames/r.php?c=ugHqijPa which is based off of http://brantsteele.net/hungergames/r.php?c=FlMMyAqW.

Last round's winner is >>>/ara/

The next round will likely start Sunday somewhere between 9am and 11am ET to make up for this shit.

With that all being said, nominate your boards now and suggest some events for either code if you want (or even better, put your events into the mansion code since I won't mind people messing with that code. Just let me know if you do update it). Also, if I missed anything, let me know so I can correct the OP for next time.

De-globalize /pol/

You've had your fun, and the board is a defanged pile of literal shit. You've even censored the logs so we can't tell which of your dogs is deleting shit while allowing things that violate your own rules to fill the catalog up. /pol/ needs an actual BO and mod staff, not some global cancer you only put in because you yourself got banned there.

R: 40 / I: 1 / P: 2 [R] [G] [-]

Individual Embedding

I've asked before, but it's apparently fallen off the board; so here we go again! I'd like the BO to be able to decide on individual embedding. For example: I run a SFW board, so I would like to keep youtube embeds, but disallow pornhub embeds. As it stands now, the choice is either all or none. Obviously, it's not a hugely important issue, but if it can be considered, that would be awesome. If you can't give individual for each allowed site, perhaps you could split between two SFW (youtube, vimeo, etc) and NSFW (redtube, pornhub, etc) options? Thanks!

Hello /sudo/. A long time ago, CodeMonkey wanted to try a Hunger Games event for advertising boards using the global announcement feature. After a particularly shitty week between me being busy and sick, I am back for another round of this. At least archives are updated for once.

For the 8chan Attention-Hungry Games, any board with less than 300 users can nominate themselves to participate, with up to 48 boards being able to participate (or we can go to 24 or 36 if we don't get enough boards). Hi Codemonkey,

I've got a feature request. Could you please add a button to each page that enables a user to download all images in that thread in one go so that the user doesn't have to go through and manually right-click download each one? I mean in the section where it says "[Return] [Go to Top] [Catalog]" etc. etc. or thereabouts, or maybe at the top of the page where it says [expand all images]?

Thanks again

Is there a way to select threads and then delete all of them?

It takes around 31 years to delete one thread because 8ch is slow as shit. So if you could select more than one thread at a time for deletion it would be a great help.

Power Abuse and Snooping on /b/

Hello, the story in short:

1. The moderator known as Omlet uploads screenshots which show that he's stalking posters.

2. I create a thread* to ask him to either stop doing it or admit he's trolling. He does neither those things and in fact he admits collecting "dirt" on users. At one point he threatens to ban me for "spam".

3. The board owner Dysnomia permanently bans me with reason "No u" (as seen in pic).

My perspective:

1. Omlet abuses his power to stalk on posters by keeping track of their ID's.

2. Dysnomia, known as a friend of Omlet's, apparently condones this power abuse and removes dissent.

3. The /b/ board has a power abuse problem and a violation of anonymity problem.

What I want:

1. I want my permaban removed, because I've done nothing wrong.

2. I want Omlet gone, because he is a stalker and a snoop.

3. I want Dysnomia gone, because he enables people like Omlet and Hex and condones their abuse of power.

I showed a lot of patience in that Omlet thread, giving him a lot of time to reconsider his actions and de-escalate the situation, only to be permabanned for it. These people abuse their power. As such they are not worthy of having that power.

Delete multiple threads

Is there a way to select threads and then delete all of them?

It takes around 31 years to delete one thread because 8ch is slow as shit. So if you could select more than one thread at a time for deletion it would be a great help.

It would help if you want to delete threads from several different posters so you can't just do delete by ID.

The PIA (a proud sponsor of infinite chans) Mozilla browser extension blocks the Mozilla from referring the your URL to 8chan.net, which keeps us users from posting. In order to stop this the user must enter the extension's settings → go to "tracking" → uncheck "disable website referrer" and restart the extension. Fuck it, restart the whole browser.

I want to create an imageboard that takes the best aspects from 4chan (stable software) and 8chan (user-driven community) while leaving out the worst of it. I'm not entirely sure what language to create it in, but it needs to be lightweight and stable. This is still in the planning stage, but what I've got so far is this:

>No legacy boards (/b/, /v/, /pol/ etc.)

As has been shown by 8chan, users tend to congregate behind names they know and leave uncommonly named boards abandoned. This results in only one central board about a specific subject being active, as users will not want to explore other alternatives.

>Users can request to create their own boards or claim abandoned ones, but they must first be approved by the site administration before being created.

This is to prevent large amounts of unused boards from being created and abandoned.

>Users can vote to impeach board owners should they believe they are causing more harm than good to the board. If an overwhelming majority of the board votes to impeach a BO and the site administration believes the vote and its reasons are legitimate, the BO will be removed and a new BO will be found via an application process.

The site administration will monitor the board during the interim period.

>Site administration actions will be fully logged and public. Users will be able to view all actions by board volunteers, owners, and the site's administration.

This is to maintain a sense of trust with the administration team.

>VPNs are TOR exit nodes may be used for viewing and posting, but not for other site-related activites (board creation requests, voting on impeachment, etc.)

Since site-related manners can be easily manipulated by IP hopping, VPNs and TOR would be blocked from certain activities, but viewing and posting on the site should be left unaffected.

>Solid and secure codebase. Optimization will be top priority, and stability will take higher precedent over new features.

8chan is very spaghetti with it's codebase, and it painfully shows. Say what you will about halfchan, but at least it's stable.

Thoughts and opinions on what should be changed/added/removed?

8ch Attention-Hungry Games 66

Last Round: >>91339

Archive of Past Rounds: https://mega.nz/#F!BA8V0KYD!eRw01c3zLKSa3wzSEHE00g (Updated to Round 40.)

Hello /sudo/. A long time ago, CodeMonkey wanted to try a Hunger Games event for advertising boards using the global announcement feature. The current code for the regular events as of this writing is at http://brantsteele.net/hungergames/r.php?c=7m4OB8R2 which is based off of http://brantsteele.net/hungergames/r.php?c=FlMMyAqW.

Last round's winner is >>>/cure/

The next round will likely start Monday somewhere between 9am and 11am ET. However, I could start it on Sunday around that time if I get 48 nominations by then.

With that all being said, nominate your boards now and suggest some events for either code if you want (or even better, put your events into the mansion code since I won't mind people messing with that code. Just let me know if you do update it). Also, if I missed anything, let me know so I can correct the OP for next time.

Improve 8chan's APIs

I like to do extravagant modifications with userscripts, but I feel bad using the current json files because they're way bigger and slower than needed. There's things that I can't do smoothly because of that.

TL;DR: Let me request for the time when a board was last posted in, and when the settings were last modified. Do a small tweak to threads.json or add a similar file.

1. Allow me to find out when the board was last posted in, if I can request for this one bit of information, I will not have to keep loading catalog.json or something huge like that over and over. It's especially troublesome if I want to keep track of many small boards that don't update often, it's a huge waste of bandwidth and processing power. For example for /improve/'s you'll have to keep re-loading and processing over half a million character's worth of JSON for several days even though nobody has posted anything the whole time, and that's just 1 board. I literally just need 1 integer for a given board, I can then compare against that value and request catalog.json ONLY if something new has actually been posted. Bonus points if it's possible to request these values for multiple boards in one go.

2. Similarly, allow me to check when the settings on a board were last changed. Stuff like posting limits and other options are a huge pain to extract from the HTML (and I think you can't even get the bump limit from it), I'd much rather load the settings.json, store it in localstorage and keep referencing that, and re-load it if it has been updated. I wouldn't mind if this value was bundled with the last post time.

3. Not as important as the other two, but it would be nice to have a file that's optimized for auto-updating the catalog. In other words it needs to contain only the information that actually changes: threads' last modification time and reply/image counts, and thread number of course. threads.json is very close but not quite there, and the last modification date doesn't change if the thread is bumplocked, which is silly because it's correctly positioned in the array anyway so I don't see any benefit to locking the modification date on it. There's no need to load everything in the universe every 10 seconds, you can load catalog.json or whatever when you detect a new thread.

Firefox dies when entering 8chan

Real technical issue here:

I'm on a laptop, running Win 7 64-bit. Last year, I've downloaded Firefox, because I was fed up how Chrome refused to load this site properly. At first, I was satisfied, but after a while, this strange problem arised:

>enter 8chan

>literally any board

>starts to load

Three possible outcomes:

1. It finishes loading, no little infinity logo at the top, I can't click on any thread.

2. It loads, loads, loads, nothing happens, I can't click on anything. If I rarely can click, that command is sucked up to the aether, and nothing happens.

3. It loads, then freezes, and it takes literal minutes to start the Task Commander and shut down Firefox.

>inb4 your laptop is shit

It doesn't produce this issue with Firefox on any other website, just here.

I have Tampermonkey installed that runs Dollchan script, but the browser produces the issue with or without Tampermonkey running, I've tried it. Sometimes I get a notification saying "a command file has crashed, what do you want to do?"

What could possibly be the problem? How do I solve it?
