8ch Attention-Hungry Games 78

Last Round: >>97946

Archive of Past Rounds: https://mega.nz/#F!BA8V0KYD!eRw01c3zLKSa3wzSEHE00g (Updated to Round 66.)

Hello /sudo/. A long time ago, CodeMonkey wanted to try a Hunger Games event for advertising boards using the global announcement feature. After being sick for the latter half of last week, I am back. I guess it works out a bit given how late /x/ was added to the global announcements last week.

For the 8chan Attention-Hungry Games, any board with less than 300 users can nominate themselves to participate, with up to 48 boards being able to participate (or we can go to 24 or 36 if we don't get enough boards). These 48 or so boards compete on a Hunger Games simulator hosted on BrantSteele. The current code for the regular events as of this writing is at http://brantsteele.net/hungergames/r.php?c=40csiWmK which is based off of http://brantsteele.net/hungergames/r.php?c=FlMMyAqW.

The Mansion code that I used once but regretted using afterwards is at http://brantsteele.net/hungergames/r.php?c=9nWM8wfc from >>>/hungergames/17115

Anyway, the winner gets to be advertised as a global announcement for about a week.

As for the requirements for signing up:

1. No boards that promote raiding other 8chan boards.

2. Must have less than 300 active users at the start of the game.

3. Can't have won the hunger games in the past round. Last round's winner is >>>/x/

4. Need to submit a SFW sentence that advertises their board that CodeMonkey can put in the global announcement. (NSFW boards are welcome to join, but the announcement should be SFW). Failure to do so will result in anons deciding your sentence via dubs, usually to your detriment. CodeMonkey will be the one to determine what is and what isn't SFW as he controls the global announcements.

5. It is recommended you post a picture with your nomination, and that picture should be square as it will be stretched otherwise. I will determine the gender of you tribute based on the picture. If I can't tell, I am defaulting to M. Also, MLP images will be ignored unless it came from a MLP board, if the BO approves of it, or from a certain image for /suicide/ until their BO says otherwise as they had that certain image before I added this part of the rule.

6. If a BO of a board does not want to participate, please don't nominate it. Board Owners, if you don't want to participate but someone nominated you, please let me know before the start of the round IN THIS THREAD and I will remove it from the list. As of now, /miku/, /jp/, and /islam/ have asked not to participate.

7. Nominate only 1 board per IP hash per post. For posts that nominate more than 1 board and an IP hash nominating multiple boards, I will take the first board and ignore the rest, and I will know if you are samefagging. For those with VPNs, note that someone may be using the same VPN as you when nominating, which means they may have the same IP Hash and I can't distinguish VPN users from normal ones.

8. Once a round concludes, please wait until the next thread is created before you nominate a board.

The next round will likely start Sunday somewhere between 9am and 11am ET. Maybe Monday at that time if something comes up Sunday, which is unlikely.

With that all being said, nominate your boards now and suggest some events for either code if you want (or even better, put your events into the mansion code since I won't mind people messing with that code. Just let me know if you do update it). Also, if I missed anything, let me know so I can correct the OP for next time.

Sunlight on Sunshine

About Sunshine

Earlier, Sunshine came to my attention again after the source code for it was posted on freech's /intb/ board (https://archive.is/6sPs7#selection-2161.0-2205.53). Since users were concerned about it, I investigated the Sunshine code and looked back through my logs to figure out exactly when it was created, why it was created, for what purpose, and exactly what it does.

When?

Sunshine was created on October 9, 2015.

Why?

On October 8, 2015, the 8chan Administrator (who, at the time, was Hotwheels) received an email from the American authorities, who were concerned about a post on 8chan threatening an attack against a school in the Houston area (http://archive.is/lVsJe). Because of their incompetence, the 8chan Admin received a scanned picture of a photocopy of a printed 8chan post (pic related). The post in the picture (dated October 1, 2015) indeed contained a threat against a school in the Houston area, but due to the bureaucracy of the authorities, it arrived approximately a week too late and the original post had already been deleted.

Purpose

Sunshine was created by Hotwheels on October 9, 2015 after we discussed a way to make sure kids didn't get killed. It was meant to help prevent potential school shootings in the future if the shooter(s) happened to post specific threats on 8chan (i.e., bomb threats, shootings, etc.). Sunshine was neither an imposition nor a request by third parties. The pros of Sunshine were believed to outweigh the cons.

What Does It Do?

Sunshine takes the IP address and message of a poster, pads it with a few bytes of junk data, encrypts it using a RSA pub key, then stores the encrypted data. This data remains in encrypted form with decryption only possible by Hotwheels. With the way it is set up, nobody will be able to read anything on the Sunshine database unless they get access to Hotwheels' laptop.

Sunshine Security

When creating Sunshine, Hotwheels used a 2048-bit RSA public/private key pair with the openssl_private_decrypt() and openssl_public_encrypt() functions. The public key was stored on the server as sunshine.pem and the private key was stored on Hotwheels' laptop offsite - precisely because Hotwheels thought 8chan could be hacked one day (it was and here we are). Hotwheels told me which folder the key was in on his laptop in case he ever suddenly died and I needed to use Sunshine.

When Was It Used?

8chan gets around half a dozen requests per year from the authorities, mostly because of threats. Usually the authorities are quick and the data is still on the boards. According to my records, Sunshine was successfully used exactly once to help the Australian authorities.

How Long Was Sunshine Active?

Sunshine ran from its inception until early 2016, a period of turmoil for 8chan. During the Great Posting Crisis, it was culled to gain performance and improve posting. Sunshine was re-enabled in September 2016 and remained active until April 1, 2017. Sunshine is now disabled and will remain disabled on 8chan.

The Way Forward

I will be open-sourcing 8chan again and Sunshine will be included as a commit with instructions for any future imageboard admins who might want to use it. I have since asked Hotwheels to destroy the Sunshine private key and, on April 4, 2017 at exactly 09:56am GMT, Hotwheels destroyed it, thus ensuring Sunshine can never be unencrypted.

Of course, I have chat logs and emails to back this up, which is why I am able to give you so many details on such short notice.

Now that this is out of the way, I have mod.php to fix, boards to restore, and a website to run.

Obnoxious /pol/ Board Setting

Whoever /pol/ BO Permissions, Please Uncheck This Box

Why should reposting files be prohibited on /pol/, a 25 page board of 751 reply threads where files are likely to be posted multiple times? I could see the argument for prohibiting reposting files within a given thread, there's a separate checkbox for that, but having this particular box checked is nothing but a massive nuisance for everybody.

Undeletable spam

Hi, board owner of the humble /o/ here.

Not less than a day ago, there has been spam posted on the board that doesn't show up in the mod interface or in report queue at all.

Only regular users can see it both in the catalog and the front page. Accessing it produces a 404.

Is there anything I can do to remove it or do I just wait it out?

R: 4 / I: 0 / P: 1 [R] [G] [-]

Hey, newfag BO of diy here, I'd like some help getting rid of spam like pic related. The last few days there has been identical new threads like this with only variations like name and link.

The reply page is always 404. The thread comes up with a broken image on both index and catalog but doesn't show up on either when logged in as BO, so I don't know how to get to it. Me and others have tried reporting it to BO but it doesn't show up in the report queue at the dashboard.

Someone said other boards had this issue.

R: 8 / I: 0 / P: 1 [R] [G] [-]

Another spammer, it's been two days in a row and it shows no signs of stopping. Bans are completely useless, of course, because there's an endless number of proxies at the spammer's disposal. (What's the point of bans anyway, if literally anyone can easily evade them?) Why isn't there an option to ban proxies, similar to how Tor posting can be disabled? Every thread is made from a different IP, so I have to ban each one individually and manually, because we don't have automated bans based on keywords.

The only thing that seems to make a difference is thread captcha, which I've always kept disabled because it's a pain in the ass for regular users and I'd rather not discourage thread creation on an already slow board. Limiting the maximum number of threads per hour saves a few minutes of time and gives me a little peace of mind that there won't be entire pages of spam to delete when I wake up, but other than that, it does nothing to stop the attacks. Why are we always at the mercy of spammers?

P.s.: I tried to send this to Codemonkey via e-mail, but the mail failed to deliver. Never had this problem before.

tl;dr WE NEED BETTER TOOLS TO FIGHT SPAM

Pedo reporting and saltmining thread

ITT we post links to posts that violate DOST or even appears to violate DOST. Anti pedo anons can then report them. Multiple reports will mean that at least one of the following global mods

1. SneakoSupremo

2. FEMA

3. ChrisHansen

will see them and remove them.

If it looks shady just post the links here. Even if it technically doesn't violate DOST some of the above global mods are also antipedo and they will delete it anyway and you can watch pedo butthurt.

Remember it doesn't matter if the picture itself is kosher. If there is some accompanying text by the pedo that implies sexualization that post can be deleted.

8ch Attention-Hungry Games 77

Last Round: >>97315

Archive of Past Rounds: https://mega.nz/#F!BA8V0KYD!eRw01c3zLKSa3wzSEHE00g (Updated to Round 66.)

Hello /sudo/. A long time ago, CodeMonkey wanted to try a Hunger Games event for advertising boards using the global announcement feature.

Last round's winner is >>>/film/

Now we have a global cuckptcha per post on TOR. Is this because of the hapas are superior poster? Pretty amazing that some /intl/ shill can still cause this shitty ass website to seize up 4 years after the fact.

All this means is that more traffic will fall from your shitty ass website because no normal person wants to expose themselves to using this shithole after its been taken over by shills and literal Nazis and you stupid fucks have sat on your hands and done nothing about it. It's probably too late to do anything now anyway, this is the future you chose. /pol/ and /leftypol/ should both be banned and replaced with /new/ like Hotwheels wanted. I've asked before, but it's apparently fallen off the board; so here we go again! I'd like the BO to be able to decide on individual embedding. For example: I run a SFW board, so I would like to keep youtube embeds, but disallow pornhub embeds. As it stands now, the choice is either all or none. Obviously, it's not a hugely important issue, but if it can be considered, that would be awesome. If you can't give individual for each allowed site, perhaps you could split between two SFW (youtube, vimeo, etc) and NSFW (redtube, pornhub, etc) options? Thanks!

Sup, I was gone for 3-4 months and my mod account password stopped working. I know about the 2-week ownership but my boards are dead slow anyway.

Is it a normal thing for accounts to get killed, was there a board screwup? I just need a link to what I'm supposed to read to fix this, thanks.

I notice the brand new and sparsely populated board /veganism/ is in my top of page board links 90% of the time I load a page. It’s basically stickied there. Is this because global mods are vegan faggots?

Assign a board owner to /pol/

Kamphy is gone now and the existing mods cannot keep up with the level of newfag shitposting after the NZ shooting, the posts per hour have doubled. /pol/ needs a new board owner who can appoint more vols to bring the spam under control. The restrictions placed on the current vols cause the level of discussion to be lowered overall and the board can only be improved with new ownership.

This doesn't work.

When I set this to 0 it does not disable. It blocks inline loading of images so I have to open them in another tab or put 999999999 into the field to make it stop blocking image loads.

Who is this even for? Mobile fags on limited bandwidth? Let them deal with it then. Keep this nonsense away from desktop users.

Shalom /sudo/! I saw the maintenance announcement on blotter and I'd just like to interject for a moment. When I saw "PST" (dafuq is "PST"? Is it "Poopy Standard Time"??? I suddenly become so disgusted with the site (and myself for using it) that I literally started shaking. To avoid confusing others and making it more easy for everyone to know when you are forced to stop shitposting, you should use UTC time and provide the time and date in an international format, as defined by ISO 8601 (i.e. YYYY-MM-DD). Even W3Cuck and IETF suggest using ISO 8601. Could you start using UTC and ISO 8601? pls

/b/ ownership

Hi, I'd like ownership of >>>/b/, please. That legacy board has been dethroned by >>>/b2/ and continues spiraling downward.

What I'd do:

1. Purge all vols.

2. Undo all bans.

3. Install free speech rules.

If I fail to unfuck it you can always give ownership back to Dysnomia and let him continue his social experiments unabated.

8ch Attention-Hungry Games 76

Last Round: >>96079

Archive of Past Rounds: https://mega.nz/#F!BA8V0KYD!eRw01c3zLKSa3wzSEHE00g (Updated to Round 66.)

Hello /sudo/. A long time ago, CodeMonkey wanted to try a Hunger Games event for advertising boards using the global announcement feature. I hope you all had a nice Easter.

The current code for the regular events as of this writing is at http://brantsteele.net/hungergames/r.php?c=aGtDJF7D which is based off of http://brantsteele.net/hungergames/r.php?c=FlMMyAqW.

Last round's winner is >>>/caco/

Since mandatory overtime isn't a thing for me for the foreseeable future, I might as well bring the schedule back to this time. I can still run this Monday if I need to.

With that all being said, nominate your boards now and suggest some events for either code if you want (or even better, put your events into the mansion code since I won't mind people messing with that code. Just let me know if you do update it). Also, if I missed anything, let me know so I can correct the OP for next time.

JPEG thumbnail preview

There is a bug where mouse-over a link to another thread does not show the thumbnail if the underlying file has a *.jpeg extension. Works fine for *.jpg *.png etc.

I think I found the problem in 'main.js'. (pic related)

*.jpeg files currently carry their extension over as-is to their thumbnail filenames.

fix the caching so that the pages wont load with default settings every time when i press f5. it always loads the page content before the settings so things like hidden threads and the default css shows for few seconds. its not a problem on any other imageboard so it should not be hard to fix.

Responsive CSS for PPH

Look at this travesty. It's how wide your browser window can be stretched just pixels before the PPH metric shows up. Why? PPH is such a narrow column. Why can't you just always show it? Why don't you make the Active ISPs [?] column header wrap? That would gain just the right amount of real estate to always show PPH. I am tired of phone posting and not being able to see the PPH even if I turn my phone horizontally.

Please just let people type the name of the board they want to search instead of forcing them to load and scroll through 13,000 menu items.

Also, here's an idea: Let people search through multiple or through all boards.

Remedy is banning large swaths of IP addresses

Remedy is out of control

He needs to be reined in or, probably an even better idea, removed entirely. Just since this past March 1st, Remedy has instituted 546 bans. Granted, many of these bans were only for a few days and have since expired, but a very large number are in the lengths of weeks, oftentimes between four and nine. Furthermore, he has a bot that autobans, but it sucks so bad that it's triggered by false flags. He also manually bans mass IPs for reason "pedo" when most of the posts aren't pedo at all.

Codemonkey, stop being a total gook and get in here and fix your site for a change. Christ, you've been absent for months, only to check in to push a few useless fixes that nobody asked for. Problems are building up, your mods are running amoke doing whatever they like, the site is running like shit, and you're just a useless, brown, sack of shit that needs to kill himself or fucking fix your goddamn site. You choose.

Active ISP metric is bullshit

Dear Gooky -

You need to do something about the Active ISP metric on the board list. It's utter bullshit. /b/'s PPH has been tanking fast ever since the emergence of /b2/ about three days ago, yet their ISP count has been steadily hovering at around 1,100 to 1,200. There is no way that, in the past three days, there have been posts from over a thousand unique IP ranges. Either the metric is bugged or someone is exploiting it by post pumping through proxies and VPNs.

Doesn't matter in the end, I guess, since /b/ is about to suck on /b2/'s tasty ass gas and slip into the #4 spot in a mere matter of hours, but it needs to be addressed.
